El teléfono sonó temprano en la mañana, era un día particularmente lluvioso en el que no dan ganas de salir de cama. Me tomé un momento antes de contestar, en realidad no tenía la más mínima idea de quién podría ser a esa hora. Al escuchar una voz al otro lado de la línea la reconocí incorrectamente como mi reciente ex novia, quién tres días antes me había dicho que no quería volverme a hablar jamás. Saludé con desgano, no estaba enojado, solo que no quería hablar con ella y menos a esa hora. Pero pronto me di cuenta del error, no era ella, sino su hermana. Su voz un poco más aguda y agitada me sacó de aquel adormecimiento en el que me encontraba.
Cuando me preguntó si Clara estaba conmigo se me fue la voz, supe enseguida que estaba desaparecida. Ella me dijo que sabía que habíamos estado juntos dos días antes, y me preguntó qué había sucedido, pero no pude responderle más que generalidades, estaba completamente desconcentrado. Sin darme cuenta de en qué momento se cortó la llamada me puse zapatos sin medias, una camisa mal abotonada, la chaqueta, y salí a buscarla. Después de un par de cuadras de carrera sentí cómo se rompía mi corazón.
“¿Y si fue mi culpa?” me dije. “¿Y si la lastimé tanto que le sucedió algo grave?”. Los bares que siempre frecuentábamos estaban cerrados, al igual que todos los demás lugares que podía imaginarme exceptuando uno, el parque donde nos reunimos la última vez. Corrí sin descanso esperando con el alma verla en aquella banca, por más improbable que eso fuera. Si quiere que yo la encuentre estará allí, pero si no, quizá no la vea nunca más. Quizá ha pasado estas dos noches en la cama con otro, quizá está muerta, quizá esté allí.
Para cuando llegué al parque estaba completamente empapado, mis zapatos pesados por el agua hacían que cada vez fuera más difícil avanzar, y mis ojos irritados por la lluvia apenas sí podían distinguir unos pasos más allá de mí. Pero al ver desde lejos la banca todo pareció esfumarse, el mundo y sus sonidos se apagaron, los colores se hicieron opacos. Caí de rodillas exhausto escuchando sólo mi respiración agitada y mi corazón a punto de rendirse, y lloré ahí, lamentándolo todo una vez más.
Lo que vi, ciertamente no me lo esperaba. La banca se encontraba vacía, mi desesperación creció aún más porque tenía la esperanza de que ella se encontrara allí. De ver nuevamente esos ojos que me enamoraron, su sonrisa que alegraba cada uno de los momentos en los cuales yo me encontraba triste. Aquella por la que un día dejé mi pueblo por ir tras de ella.
Llamé nuevamente a su hermana para preguntar si tenía alguna respuesta del paradero de Clara, pero con grandes sollozos me respondió que no había noticia alguna. Mencionó que no era normal, que ella siempre se comunicaba a decir si se demoraba, o dónde se encontraba. La consolé un poco diciéndole que se calmara, que lo más probable era que estuviera donde alguna amiga y que seguramente pronto se comunicaría o apareciera en casa.
Al colgar sabía muy dentro de mí que algo le había ocurrido. Quien más que yo para saber el actuar de aquella chica que me había acompañado por tan largo tiempo. Mi corazón latía cada vez más fuerte, sentía su latir desbordar mi pecho. Recordé que siempre que ella se sentía sola o triste se refugiaba donde su gran amiga, aquella con la cual había vivido la mayor parte de su niñez. La que era la confidente en cada uno de sus secretos.
Me dirigí hacia su domicilio. Al llegar me sentí ansioso por golpear aquella puerta blanca grande con vidrios de color azul, para recibir una pronta respuesta sobre el paradero de Clara pero al golpear un, dos, tres veces… nadie respondió. Nuevamente creció mi temor y la esperanza de dar con su paradero se disipaba.
Así pasaron 8 días sin saber de Clara, hasta que aquella mañana recibí la llamada de un hospital. Con gran susto contesté, pero a la vez con entusiasmo, porque de pronto eran noticias de Clara. “¿Don Ángel por favor?”. “Si con él habla”. “Es que tenemos internada un chica de la cual no tenemos ningún documento, solo encontramos un papel donde estaba este número con su nombre” “¿Pero ella cómo esta, se encuentra bien?”, fue lo que se vino a la mente. “Ella fue encontrada en una calle y está en este momento en coma, necesitamos algún pariente para tomar algunas decisiones”. “Sí ya mismo me dirijo allí con su hermana…”.
Cuando llegamos, la cara del doctor tenía una expresión neutra, de tranquilidad. Sin embargo, sabía que algo había pasado. “Buenas, yo soy Ángel Fandiño y esta es Lucrecia Tévez, hermana de Clara, la paciente que tienen. El doctor nos llevó a la habitación en donde Clara se encontraba. Su rostro se veía tranquilo, pero tenía unas marcas extrañas en el rostro. “Encontraron a Clara inconsciente en la calle Trinidad. Una mujer que no quiso identificarse la reconoció y llamó a las autoridades. Recibió varios golpes en su rostro, cabeza y cuerpo.
El examen de toxicología indica que fue mantenida bajo sedantes fuertes por un periodo constante. Las contusiones en su cabeza son las más graves. Ahora mismo Clara está viva, pero se encuentra en coma. Creemos que la probabilidad de que no despierte de dicho coma es de un 95% o más, e incluso si llegase a despertar, sus funciones motoras no serían las mismas. Lamento mucho tener que informarles acerca del delicado estado de Clara”.
Sentí un mareo repentino que me obligó a sentarme y los sentimientos y recuerdos forzaron lágrimas que no habían salido hace por lo menos cinco años. Clara era joven y hermosa y se encontraba en el apogeo de su vida. El señor Fausto y la señora Marina, los padres de Clara, llegaron un par de horas después de la llamada de Lucrecia. Su casa quedaba a las afueras de la ciudad, en una zona de gente adinerada. Tras escuchar el diagnóstico de los profesionales a cargo de Clara, la decisión fue tomada esa misma noche por la familia. Clara sería desconectada de los aparatos que la hacían permanecer con vida. Una recuperación era un milagro y la familia de Clara no se quería aferrar a ese 5% de probabilidad, ni querían que el resto de los días de Clara fueran miserables.
Les ofrecí mis condolencias y los acompañé hasta su auto. “¿Y tú cómo has lidiado con todo esto, Ángel?”, preguntó la señora Marina, quien tenía los ojos hinchados de tanto llorar. “Con mucha tristeza y resignación. Todavía no lo puedo creer”. “Entren al auto”, dijo el señor Fausto. Su mujer e hija ingresaron. El señor Fausto había crecido en un ambiente de fincas y terratenientes, en el que la posesión de armas era una gran pasión y la protección de la tierra e intereses podía llegar a extremos violentos.
“La resignación no es una posibilidad, muchacho. No te dejes llevar demasiado por el nombre que te dieron tus progenitores. Algunas veces hay que ensuciarse las manos. La culpa de esto es mía y los que le hicieron esto a mi hija pagarán. Dame una llamada cuando hayas reaccionado y quieras honrar la memoria de Clara de una manera productiva”. Pero sabía que nunca lo llamaría, no era lo que Clara hubiera querido. Ella odiaba el temperamento caliente de su padre y por eso mismo había durado tanto tiempo con alguien completamente opuesto. El señor Fausto escogió como lidiar con su dolor y lo único que podía hacer era desearle lo mejor en ese camino, aunque sé que nada podría llenar el vacío que tiene. Yo, personalmente, considero que el odio y rencor es contraproducente y por lo tanto preferí dejar que la justicia actuara y rezar por el alma de Clara, que tantos aprendizajes y buenos recuerdos me dejó.
