Para el tercer día del crucero ya me encontraba exhausto, el calor de aquel balancín ambulante era insoportable, las piscinas completamente llenas y el aroma a aceite cocinándose sobre la piel de los sonrosados turistas me habían dejado en un perpetuo estado prevomitivo.
Un mareo incesante y crónico que empeoraba con las visitas obligadas a las tiendas de diamantes y relojes a tres mil dólares más impuestos. La obscena obsesión de aquellos obesos observadores por las luces insoportables, los brillos relucientes en todas las cosas, los espejitos de colores y la comida grasosa me había dejado un perpetuo tono verdoso en la piel.
Llegué finalmente a la cubierta del crucero donde el océano inmenso, profundo y frío me tranquilizó. La brisa salada llenando mis pulmones me dio cierta nostalgia, un cierto ambiente apacible me rodeó y mi mente por fin me dejó tranquilo, completamente hipnotizado por este horizonte infinito.
Pero esta calma no duro mucho, en realidad nunca me volví a sentir tranquilo mirando el mar desde entonces. Algo apareció en aquel horizonte azul, era diminuto, realmente pequeño. No podía distinguir qué era, pero parecía estar en la trayectoria del inmenso crucero. Me dirigí pronto hacia la proa esperando ver con más facilidad este pequeño objeto con mis binoculares, antes de que estuviera fuera de alcance. Para cuando logré ver qué era, deseé no haber perseguido mi curiosidad. Una botella flotante con un papel dentro.
La curiosidad se apoderó de mi ser. Tenía pocos minutos para actuar, o nunca sabría acerca el contenido de ese papel. No había ningún elemento largo con que sustraer la botella. La única solución era lanzarme tras ella y después gritar para que me rescataran. ¡Sí, eso haría!
Estaba ya en el mar y con la botella en la mano, no obstante, lo importante en el momento era lograr que me escuchara alguien en el crucero, para que me rescatara. Chiflé lo más duro que pude, una técnica que aprendí de mi abuelo desde muy pequeño, pero no lograba distinguir a nadie. Solo estaba la imponente embarcación blanca, que poco a poco se iba. Por algún motivo, no sentía miedo o desespero.
Cuando el crucero ya se encontraba a una distancia en la que era imposible que me escucharan, abrí la botella y saqué el papel. Esto era lo que decía: la curiosidad mató al gato.
